Lost Battles is a regimental/battalion level simulation of various common type Eastern Front WWII engagements. It holds a special place in wargaming history as it introduced a number of design concepts that would be taken into or inspire all of the major SPI eastern front titles as well as GDW's Europa series. It features four scenarios of hypothetical battles and supplies a rich mix of unit types: tank, assault gun, reconnaissance, infantry, armored infantry, motorized, anti-tank, direct fire artillery, anti-tank artillery, engineers, headquarters, supply, plus air strike rules to carry out operations with. Gamers who like the game mention the fog of war mechanics, where all units are visible, but the enemy's objectives are unknown along with the way movement and zones of control are treated. Frank Chadwick cited Lost Battles as inspiring many Europa game concepts! Articles in this issue... Military Systems Profile: The Dark Ages, 500-1200 by Stephen B. Patrick Soviet & German Weapons and Tactics in the East by James F. Dunnigan Sackson on Games by Sid Sackson. Game designer: James Dunnigan. Published July\August 1971 by SPI.
