The cover (high grade excellent condition with only slight flaws, such as slight creasing near the middle spine staple which is probably too faint to show up in the enlargeable pictures), magazine with rules attached (high grade excellent condition with glossy white pages and no marks, stains, etc. as there is a diagonal crease of about ¼ inches to the upper right hand corner of all of the pages), full-color 34"x22" map (near new condition except for a slight creasing to two of the intersections of the folds which might have resulted from being bumped or might be from the printer's folding process), and 280 counters (unpunched in new condition and nicely-centered on both sides) are all in high grade excellent to new condition. A highly sought after issue with an excellent bonus!!
The bonus includes the officially updated rules with changes made over a year after the game's release including official errata and game reviews\overviews of the game. Also included is duplicate of the replacement counter from Strategy & Tactics #224 and two unofficial variants. Some to all of the bonus will be sent by email upon shipping your purchase. All bonus and extras material are available for sale separately if requested. Group of Soviet Forces Germany is a two-player simulation examining what might have happened in the first 30 days of fighting had Western Germany been invaded by Soviet forces in the 70s. The games assumes an invasion without lengthy preparation or forewarning as it was to the Soviets advantage not to allow NATO to mobilize. Also political and military realities are assumed to have required minimal participation by Warsaw Pact forces, aside from the East Germans who were heavily tied into front line Soviet units. Experienced wargamers should find the rules easy to pick up. Set up is fast. Lots of options for the Soviets with NATO having some opportunities for a well-planned counter attack. Elegant game mechanics such as combat losses in steps and no Zones of Control, make the games a fluid mix of the West's doctrine of flexible warfare versus the East's approach of victory by numbers. The outcomes are tense and enjoyable. Suggestions for play are 1) copy the charts on the last page and 2) create a list of the 1st turn special rules. The game updates and revises SPI's 1973 release, "NATO: Operational Combat in Europe in the 1970s". Its time and space scales have been preserved, but the map has been improved by reflecting a more in depth terrain analysis. The system has been updated and the orders of battle are more fully developed. Air warfare has been added, at least as an abstract, and tactical nukes have been taken away except as possible game enders. The orders of battle for both sides are based on open-source documents that have become available since the parent game was first published. The system, though more complex than the original game, is at the lower end of today's complexity scale. Each hexagon on the map represents approximately 10 miles (16.2 kilometers) from side to opposite side. The Soviet units of maneuver are divisions, as are most NATO units, along with a few brigades and regiments. Each full game turn represents two days. The game map illustrates the militarily significant terrain found in the western portion of Germany and its environs in the late 1970s. There are 280 unit counters in the game, most of which represent combat formations. Others are also provided as informational markers and memory aids. Game Designer: Ty Bomba and Joseph Miranda.
